Pusha T Says His Verse On “New God Flow” Was Inspired By Birdman
The cold war between YMCMB and G.O.O.D. Music has been documented for quite a while. Issues between Kanye, Pusha T, Common and more against Lil Wayne, Birdman and Drake's crew have bubbled with only the rare moments when names are named in the subliminal wars.
Yesterday, Pusha T spoke to Hip-Hop Wired about those issues between the crews and why he will not respond to Lil Wayne's "Ghoulish" record. He also explains that "New God Flow" was a response to another member of the Cash Money camp, and more. Read on below.
Hip Hop Wired: For as competitive as an MC that you are, you've decidedly backed off of responding to Lil Wayne's diss record, "Ghoulish." Was that just a business decision to you since Wayne and Big Sean have a record together, and Sean is your man? Why was there no response?
Pusha T: In all honesty it was that bad to me. "Ghoulish" was that bad to me. I don't know like your taste particularly. Cause I feel all writers have a dope taste in music. But me personally, I think that s**t was wack and borderline disrespectful. Like, "Exodus" hurt. That Isht hurt man. Like hurt souls. That Isht had the biggest rappers in the game commenting on me immediately the day after. On twitter! Millionaires! Twitter thugging. I had millionaires twitter thugging! That's why "Ghoulish" is beyond me. I wouldn't dare. I couldn't dare. Listen man i was in my bed with my girl. She looked at me and said "no, like...no! This is really bad." [Laughs] I swear to you she was like "baby no, this can't be it!" So you know at the end of the day it's about good rap to me. It's about good rap to me this s**t ain't about like being....
HHW: So it ain't personal to you?
PT: Oh no! F**k no! I don't know them motherf-ckers. Not for real. I mean I've been around them
HHW: But yeah you've done videos together back in the day like "What Happened to that boy" among others.
PT: 100% man. 100%. But it ain't even like that man. I don't have no ill will towards none of them man. Really I don't. I know for sure that their wills towards me is way iller than mine towards them. I know that. But it's like, I don't have ill will. That's why I can be like "aww, f**k that. That s**t ain't good." Cause if it ain't going to be about making awesome, awesome music, then what are we doing.
HHW: To a lot of people, it might seem a little more deeper than that. The ties with you and Kanye and people saying Drake throws shots at him an Kanye is your man and you know that whole Cold War that you got going on...
Push: But you know what? I'm glad people do peep this s**t. I'm just not one to take shots. I'm not one to take a shot like that. Some people are at a level in their career...like 'Ye is at a level in his career where he shouldn't even respond. Like he shouldn't even hear a shot. I don't know if he hear shots or he even pays attention to it. I'm petty.
HHW: We are talking bout Wayne n Drake now right?
PT: I'm talking about the whole s**t. I hear s**t and I'm petty. If I feel like maybe .... just to remain cordial with Ye and them so on and so forth. I am not one to look past s**t like that. I'm just really not for it and I feel like I have a lot to lose. These guys are major man. And they make good music.
HHW: Like you said, it's all about making good music at the end f the day so can you ever see yourself making good music together?
PT: I don't know man. Like I said I have no issue with them man. I just refuse to be talked about. I will not be disrespected and anyone I stand next to wont be disrespected. I know the good intentions of my crew. They ain't nothing like me. They ain't like that they really just about their s**t. They really just about their music.
I take things a certain way. I take interviews in magazines personal and s**t, when you say G.O.O.D Music ain't nothing. Like I take s**t like that sensitive. That's how I made "New God Flow" that's what that Isht is about. Like I take all of that personal. But never so personal that I send "F**k yous" out to anybody.
HHW: So "New God Flow" was directed at Wayne and Drake?
PT: "New God Flow" was about, in my view, something I read in a Birdman interview that I didn't like. He said something like "G.O.O.D. Music isn't nothing" and it had nothing to do with Wayne or Drake per se. That was Birdman saying whatever he wanted to say and that was the basis of where all of my lines came from. Everybody else was on their love of Hip-Hop s**t.
